I discovered something a little odd about my Nikon D3100. I was messing about using live view (which I never use normally) and found out that it consistantly overexposed by exactly +0.3 EV compared to exactly the same shot through the viewfinder. I did several controlled test shots and checked the histograms, it was very conclusive and I could get exactly the same exposure through the viewfinder by dialling in +0.3 EV

At first I thought this might have been an idiosyncrasy of live view, but when I tested the same thing on my D90 it metered exactly the same regardless of whether it was live view or through the viewfinder. Both cameras on matrix metering. A quick google on the subject didn't turn anything up.

Does anyone have a D3100, and does yours do this too?

Excuse my "rookieness", but I have a D3100 and was able to confirm your findings. I setup on a tripod, auto with no flash and had the same results as you. That being said I am not a huge fan of LV as I just find it all around slower at AF and shutter lag.

Is this something that Nikon can fix with a firmware update?

Thanks for the info. Looks like it's not just mine then. I wonder if this is deliberate by Nikon or a firmware bug.
