D850 w/300mm AF-S f/4 (non vr) with 1.4 mult vs 300mm in crop mode?

I'm using a Nikon non vr AF-S 300mm f/4. Which should be the best? With the NIkon 1.4 mult (420mm) you will be using the FF sensor (45 mp) but loosing 1 stop + the added image degradation of the mult. In crop mode (450mm) you will be only using the sharpest part of the lens and retain f/4 but loosing a little over 25mp. Which should be the best?

I've been using this lens with the TC for a while and I am quite sure they work well together. I'm reaching out to other users to see what their experience has been using this combination. Up until now, I've had mixed results.
