Tonights experiment was with a dandelion, several options available and this is what I went with this time around.

The first 2 the compostion is identical (slight difference in crop), its only the light that alters dramatically.

1.

2. My pick of the bunch.

3. Again different lighting, the use of a white background modified with a strobe to be a dark grey graduation.

I shot the last one first, went to set up for the real macro, got it dialed in, almost had the focus and F$%&KIT all, an air disturbance caught it and munted the thing, lol.

Will post some general examples of how differnet light placements altered this shot further if requested.

Thoughts?

I can't offer you anything except...you are very creative, I appreciate the angles you used. Great pics!

I much prefer #1 over #2.

#3, removing the seeds from the front half of the DL you were able to keep both the centre & perimeter in focus since they were now in the same plane. Cool idea.

Thanks for your feedback.

I like the 3rd the most. It's a creative idea and very well executed.

I know you wanted the gradient background but I burned in the right side with photoshop to see what it would look like. I like it more this way - looks like it pops more - but it's one of those things that not everyone is going to feel the same way about.

EDIT: Sorry kinda darkened your signature/watermark in the process... unintentional though :P

#2 really caught my eye and held it. Great work.

#2 for me, nice job

Cheers Arch!

Thanks for the edit reznap, I like it!

You probably cant tell at this res but this is not as sharp as my usual work, had major issues getting the focus due to lack of ambient light and there was something else going on as well that I just couldnt put my finger on, but I am pretty sure it had something to with my aperture, more testing is in order.

I like 1 the best. Nice angle.

thanks

#2 really caught my eye and held it. Great work.

Mine too, I was shooting tethered at the time, saw this one and worked the light a few more times, got some really interesting results.

Wow, all three are really nice! Even though they're of the same subject each says something different. I find my eyes keep going back to #2... kinda haunting in a beautiful way.

What was the macro lens? And what light source did you use?

Nice job.

Thanks Aerin, I wasnt using a macro lens, but the Canon 50mm 1.8 with a full set of non contact extension tubes attached, poor mans macro :P

Light source(s) off camera speedlights.

IMO:
All three are great though I'm going to be the oddball and say #1 is my fav.
