Dark Pictures

i got a new camera and even on automatic all the pictures turn out too dark.. what can i do aside from shooting all in manual and mentally compensating down a stop every time i take a picture?

a little trick i do if my unsure about the settings, i point at the object im trying to shoot .. press the shutter button down halfway .. i check the speed and aperture setting ... go to manual .. put the same settings .. adjust them up or down accordingly .. if ur using digital

Is it a "new" camera or a new to you camera? Which ever it is I would take it back it sounds like there is a problem with the camera.
