Eh, what a character study, Andy is. Now what you need is a touch of coal dust, liberally sprinkled on his face, a few streaks of sweat, and he's look like one of the coalminers that made Britain the industrial powerhouse it was...

In the first image, the slight tilt to his head takes this away from the usual portraits. The sharpness with which you render his face, the detailed texture of his skin, the clear and unblinking look to his eyes, all contribute to a powerful image. The cropping is a little severe, in that you could have given him a forehead and a chin. but I do like his position in the frame, being off-center and yet powerfully present.

The second image shows his face in the tight beam of light (excellent!), but here the positioning of the light vis-a-vis his eye makes him look like he's blind in the right eye. On the other hand, you've got the Rembrandt triangle going, his OTHER eye is well lit with a nice catchlight. There is a little light on his shirt (lower left corner) and neck, which are the only non-face objects we can see. I'd consider cropping it about 20% on the left side and maybe 10% on the right, but leaving the rest of the empty space as a velvet cushion for a rough diamond. Oh wait, we already talked about carbon...

Thank you. And I agree with the "miner" style...that does work. A bit of Northern Grit - Andy is from a Coal mining town, so it fits well.

Pleased wit the light. :)

As for his eye...Andy does have "odd" eyes...one has a baggy flap of skin above which gives him a different set of shadows. He also has a squint, one eye doesn't always track with the other. In all, a characterful face, which is why I love having him into the studio. :)

Cheers

pic two looks like a clip for senior UFC...they show that right before he makes his way out to the octagon....I like it.

pic 1 is my favorite. I like all of it, the lighting, the detail, the crop. It just works for this face.

#2. I like the exposure, the contrast, and most of all the mood and expression. Please tell me he enjoys needlepoint.
