Darn. Broke my lens. Repair, replace, upgrade...

Based on your description ... I suspect that the core plastic shell has broken ... probably will cost >$200 to repair, my guess.
 
If you send it in to Nikon for an estimate, I think they will charge you for that estimate, if you don't go through with the repair. Plus you will be out the cost of shipping both ways. So if you do nothing it may end up costing you near $100.
My guess is that the repair cost WILL be more than $100. You have broken parts to replace + repair labor.

If there is a camera tech near you, that might be a cheaper way to get a quick/ball park repair estimate.

I would start looking for a replacement/upgrade lens.
