This is from an older trip to Thailand

Hi-So is the Thai term for high society or rich people.
This is an excursion to the Grand Palace in Bangkok.
Well tended, well behaved, nicely dressed children with several minders.
Note the size and complexion similarities.
Although public display of affection is rare among adults, Thais lavish affection on their children.

unfortunately the vastly greater percentage of Thai children live a less privileged life.

This is a street vendor's child in very early morning along Sukhumvit Road

and the child of a beggar naps late at night while the mother asks for coins

As a police officer in Hong Kong 40 years ago I remember that there was a beggar like the one in your last photo sitting outside the Star Ferry Terminal in Kowloon every day. The child was not always the same one and I was told by those who worked that area that she wasn't really blind and that the child was hired by the day. The Star Ferry terminal was a very lucrative spot, she made enough to pay protection to the local triads (and in the days before the Independent Commission Against Corruption the local beat police) At the end of her work shift she always took a taxi home.
