This photo started with a 5 shot HDR of the scene processed in photomatix, and then was processed in photoshop. Exposures were at f/6.3 and ISO 640, shutter speeds ranged from 1/10 to 1/125.

This picture was the result of my first shoot after losing 3 years of work on my external hard drive. It loosely represents how I viewed the situation as whole.

Comments are welcome.

For using a 5 shot bracket, it still looks like you've lost detail in both the shadows and the highlights. Not sure why that is since those slow shutter speeds should have picked up more range... Sorry to hear you lost so much work due to a crashed hard drive. I know I've only recently become more fanatical about backing up in three places after I lost some work too.

Sorry you lost all your work, that sucks.
Great shot! Is this inside of an old shed?

That is kind of why I said in the original post that the photo started with a 5 shot HDR. The original HDR is properly exposed all throughout, but that isn't what I wanted the final image to look like. In a sense this isn't truly an HDR, but I did use HDR techniques to get the final image.

The shadows and blown out highlights both do represent something in this image to me, so I do have my reasons for keeping them as they are. If you would like I can upload the HDRi before photoshop.

This is actually inside an old barn, but close enough!

That's what HDR is for; making it work your way. I often use it as you did, to make the image look as it appeared to me at the time. Nothng whatever wrong with that.
