Decline Of The Fig

Our little Fig tree has been a trooper this year. Unfortunately it didn't start setting fruit till late in the season (possibly because of the cool spring). As a result about the time it hit peak production, along came the frost. Hopefully next years crop will be earlier. Shot with a lens I had given up on with the crop sensor, on the FF, it's a little better, though it's pretty noisy at 300 mm and ISO 6400, even after recovery in LR.

We got several off of it. It's still covered with tiny little green ones. Shame it just needed a couple more weeks.

Yep, similar experience here with our fig. We got some good fruit but lost quite a lot to the freeze.

This is the second year for ours, so hopefully next year will be better. Do you protect yours in the winter? We didn't last year and it survived, but we had some winter kill on other plants so concerned that we should have.

Yes. Here in St. Louis we have in fact shifted 1 climate zone in recent years. Things that were never possible here are now becoming normal. Figs were always very tenuous here but our Italian population has kept trying to grow them and lately they're popping up all around us. What I do is simply dump an entire bag of racked up leaves right on top of the fig. We used to go through certain Fall rituals in the garden like digging up all the canna rhizomes to bring into the basement and same for the dahlias, etc. We've stopped that now -- amazing! For the cannas we get a bale of straw and spread it at least a foot deep over the beds. With the straw or leaves on the fig it's important to wet it down. That layer of insulation and the heat generated by decay are enough now.
