When I'm checking out a lab I am unfamiliar with I try to chat with the folks running the machines. This is easier at the "consumer" labs because they are often the same people at the counter. If they are into photography I figure the odds are that they will be concerned with the quality and care given to my film. If they barely seem to know what a camera is, then I look elsewhere.
