something im trying to understand looking at buying some flashes.

say if i had a elinchrom flash head and a profoto or broncolor flash (more expensive) going into exactly the same modifier and having the same output. would the photos look exactly the same?

whats the advantage of profoto over elinchrom - is it more the flash packs, build quality - and things like that? or is it possible they have a better flash quality.

I don't know much about the specifics of those brands, but there certainly are things that can be different between different lights. For example, a good light should have consistent output & color temp. So if it's set to say, 1/2 power, it should give you the same amount of light each time. And the color temp should not only be the same each time, but it should be consistent across the power range. Most lights will show some change in color temp as the power changes, but better lights should show less change.

I would think that the design of the bulb and the area around it (reflector etc), would influence some characteristics of the resulting light, even if the same modifier was used. Probably a subtle thing, and it would be hard to say which is 'better', but it's probably there.

Other factors like build quality and reliability are things to consider. Reliability of parts and/or service.

But yes, like most other products & industries, there is a premium on the 'best' brand names.

No they would look slightly different but the main difference is in flash duration if you want to shoot very fast action you want the quickest flash duration Elincrom are one of the fastest cheaper ones
