Okay, so I know one says macro and the other is an APO, I'm not sure which one would suit me best. I'm looking for a little cheaper alternative to the Nikon's 70-200mm Lens, but if its a need be to go that route, well I guess I'll save up lol. Can anyone point out the KEY differences ?

I would sell the D3100 along with the 18-105 mm, and apply those proceeds to a D90 and a good, clean example of a used Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

Replace the 18-105 with a Nikon 24-85mm f/2.8-4.0D IF AF Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras which also has a 1:2 macro capability from 35 mm to 85 mm.

Thanks, I plan on saving over the sumer, hopefully I will be in a good financial state. I don't do photography for a side job, but I guess once I get good enough and good enough equipment I will be able to do side jobs. I was planning on upgrading shortly


EDIT: whats the difference between the two besides the D90 can use AF lenses? I did a comparison and they seem similar, especially in ISO terms. Good thing I could use the D90 as a commander to my SB-700 correct?

The difference mainly is the OS... which is equivalent to Nikons VR. Also the fact that the latest Sigma lens(OS HSM) is regarded as the best third party 70-200 lens available. I have never used one, I have never even seen one in person - but there are a bunch of reviews both website and youtube that regard this lens very highly.

When buying expensive high-end lenses, I recommend sticking with 1st party. 1st party lenses keep their value better, and you'll make back any difference when you eventually sell it. I've also never seen a sigma or a tamron f2.8 telephoto zoom that performed as well as nikon.

Here are the nikon options (price estimates are for used but near mint examples on ebay):

nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR1 = $1200-1300
nikon 80-200mm f2.8 AFS = $800-1000

If you opt to upgrade your body to something with an AF motor, like a d90, then you have these to consider:

nikon 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D "two ring" = $650-750
nikon 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D single ring = $450-550
nikon 80-200mm f2.8 AF single ring = $350-450

Keep in mind that the single ring versions of the lens have very slow autofocus in comparison to the AF-S versions. The dual-ring version is somewhere between the two in speed.

I think I will upgrade my body in the summer as well with getting the 80-200 sounds like a solid idea. Just not in the right financial state at the current moment.. College student= broke
