I just said I travel with 'em... never said I carry them all. 99% of the time, it's just the 17-35, 50 and 105. In that case I wear a vest. Most of the gear gets lugged around in a ThinkTank Streetwalker.

I have a very passionate answer to this question, which comes from experience of being a wedding photographer. At first I was all about zooms, which yes, are of course much more convenient. Being stuck at a fixed focal length and having to switch lenses every time your subject changes (which can happen, every 5 seconds) sometimes becomes unbearable and will cause you to miss moments (especially in wedding photography). If you do not have good foresight into what your next moves are going to be, you're going to figure out that using primes can be too much of a burden. The guy I shoot with mostly shoots zooms, and he loves them.

However, PRIMES do things that zooms simply cannot. Look at the DoF on an image at 1.4 vs an image at 2.8. Even if you think the difference is marginal (which really, it isn't, an entire stop is a world of difference), you will never be able to shoot so shallow on a 2.8. And every time I find myself with a great shot at 2.8, I regret to think "bet this shot would have looked great at 1.4.." The fact that they are much faster , is obviously quite a help too, especially if you don't have a magic camera like the d4 which can shoot up to 12800 ASA with no problem.

SO I realize DoF isn't everything, but you just don't have the opportunity to get shallow DoF on a 2.8 lens. And you never know when you might want to get a shallow DoF. Hope this helps

Also IMO VR and IS is moreso a selling ploy rather than a useful feature. Unless you are shooting sports or birds, most things you will not need that feature for, and will rely on your experience and ability to pick correct balances of iso and aperature to get sharp images, not is or vr.
