I have to agree with Iron flatline and some of the others. I use a lens hood for protection just about as much as I use it for keeping nasty lens flares off of my exposures. I do this with both my video cameras and my SLRs.
The only time I would say that for sure lens hoods do not lend themselves to use on your camera is when you are shooting macro. If your lens hood measures longer then your minimum shooting distance, that can for sure cause issues. Not to mention you don't need the hood robbing you of light. Plus most hoods do not play well with ring lighting and macro flashes correct?
