Do you use your DoF Preview button?

Cool.
Interesting answers.

Yes. Typically for close up shots to fine tune the DoF.

A few months after getting my dslr I decided to try it out. When I first bought it I had read about it when I read the manual, but there was so many other things to learn I kind of forgot about it. So anyway later on I looked it back up and tried it out, thought "Oh, nifty" to myself and never used it again.

My two working SLR bodies only have stop down metering, so I use the DOF preview gets used almost every frame. Comes in handy:

Only when I need it. The view finder on the 1D MkIV is nice and bright so it's not much of an issue.

I don't use it much when taking photos. But I use it all the time when I buy a used lens in person. Need to check the aperture blades.

I very rarely use it, for the following reason...

With enough experience people eventually develop a sense of how much DOF various combinations of camera, lens, exposure settings, subject distance, and subject scale in the image will deliver.

If the subject is static and using digital and modern lenses, I bracket a few shots instead at various apertures. If the subjects are mobile or the scenes are changing, I make a choice based on instinct or if going for a certain DOF look, I stay with a particular aperture and get what I get.

You can do that with the Canon 7D. Not sure about the 50D.

Of course with back-button focus activated, I just let off the focus button.

When taking macro shots I use it all the time.

When taking macro shots I use it all the time.

Same here, pretty much have only used it with macro stuff when I was getting used to such a shallow dof.... or when I have my 580ex on and I want to blind one of my friends with the modeling light for funsies.

My Xs has a poor viewfinder, so it is difficult to use it with the zoom kit (it is however slightly easier with Liveview). On the other side, I often shoot with manual focus lenses, where, willing or not, I see directly the actual DoF.
