There were 2 days last month we had thousands of dragon flys in our neighbour hood. I actually just lay on the front lawn and in our back yard and got some awesome shots.
You might consider learning to use a diffused flash for shots like this.. to give detail in the darker areas. Even without a macro lens ( you said you had tubes and regular lenses?) you can get good shots if the exposure is on.
