Just thought I'd post this up as my Dad who is also into his photography looks like he's lost 2 years of photos and files when the 2 x 10GB Drobo DAS he was using for storage and backup bricked. It looks like the system wasn't shutting down properly on power off (with no indication there was an issue) and it's caused corruption of the drives. Due to Drobo's propriety software, it's looking like the drives are not recoverable either. Needless to say these systems are not cheap, but apparently other unit's have had similar issues with random failures.
He's currently running recovery software to try and get some things back, I suggested he looks into recovering files from the lightroom backup but the recovery software that Drobo reccomended gave no results. So be cautious if you are considering using Drobo for storage and it would be wise to have a grandfather backup on a different system.
