I just bought a new computer and am in process of moving my photo archive. I'm using "Bounceback" data backup software to move everything to a transfer drive. When I ran the backup I found that out of 45k of pictures maybe 12-15 pictures were corrupt and the backup software could not transfer them from old storage (hard drive) to new storage (portable ssd). Most of the pictures in question had been on the disk drive less than a year. The file names appeared, but I couldn't open the file. Luckily I still had the original image on camera memory card so I was able to recover the files in question but it got me to thinking about corrupted files - either some sort of bit rot caused something to happen to the stored file, or when previously viewing the file some sort of hiccup corrupted the file, or, when I originally copied the file to storage the download corrupted the file. The original transfer from memory card just used Windows copy and paste. I'm inclined to use more rigorous databackup transfer such as Bounceback in the future. Curious if errors created by the the file transfer are a known phenomena. Other question is whether there is reliable software that tests stored photos for bit rot so that I don't just overwrite files with newly corrupted files
