Here's a quote from a website on macro. it has a bunch of other useful info, too. hopefully this helps:

"The macro mode on some cameras works within a particular part of the zoom range so bear this in mind when adjusting to get the optimum magnification, also look to see if the camera has two settings: macro and super macro. The latter will get you really close."
