I have a Canon G10 and have decided to upgrade to a DSLR. I have young kids so I need the fast shutter speed and low light capability. I also take alot of video clips 1m-5m long, sometimes following the kids around.

I was looking seriously at the Nikon D3100, but I saw a video online and you could hear the camera constantly refocusing. I am not looking for professional film quality, but I am looking for the best I can get while still keeping a good shutter speed.

Some people seem to imply that video with a Mirrorless or the Sony A55 would be better. But I am worried that the compromise on the shutter speed would be too much.

i dont think its possible to compromise on shutter speed... its all pretty universal.

just get a camcorder for cheap and then a dslr for photos.

I don't see what you mean by a compromise on shutter speed. The Sony a55 still tops out at 1/4000" for it's fastest shutter speed, which is quite fast. If you mean the frame rate for the video, it still shoots video at 29.97 frames/sec which really isn't a step down from regular camcorders. You have to spend quite a bit more on a camcorder to get a faster frame rate, and then it is at a much lower resolution than the a55 gives you.
