Darken ... and a slight dodge of the eye and face would add more contrast but still retain the feather detail. (Dodge/Dodge-Out means lighten. These are old wet-darkroom terms which have been adopted by PhotoShop and the ilk. Burn and Dodge are tools you can use and manually apply their associated action to specific areas of the image.)
