Editing in RAW format

It's filth and it must be scorched from the earth.

:)

I can put my support behind that assertion. :)

Cheaping out on editing software (lightroom is okay, I'm referring to the manufacturer software as "cheaping out") is a terrible decision. Editing is 1/3-1/2 the photo, IMO, so refusing to spend more than $20 or whatever on editing software is like refusing to spend more than $20-40 on camera and lenses.

How come no one ever suggests the FREE software that comes with the camera?

Usually because it sucks soooooooooooooooo bad.

They make cameras and lenses, not software. And it shows.

The expensive canon models come with lightroom and elements.
Cheap ones just have the crap canon software

GIMP with ufaw/dcraw support can do the trick.

SO I took pictures of my kids today, and alot of them came out great! I wanted to edit a few to brighten them up, but the problem is, I shot them in RAW format and the software I have (photofiltre) doesn't support it. I only use photofiltre because I dont edit my photos much, usually only a little brightening up and that's it, so ive never seen a need to spend $ on Photoshop. Anyone know of software other than photoshop that supports it? im new to this whole SLR thing, so the pictures don't need anything special since they're just personal photos anyways

First, if you have a Mac, iPhoto will view and edit RAW files.

Second, there are a range of free programs out there like IRFAN that are free and will convert RAW to jpeg. Just use these freeware programs to convert to jpeg and then do your edits in photofiltre. ViewNX2 is available from the Nikon site and won't cost you a cent. There are other freeware programs like RawConverter, ReaConverter, or even Picasa. Did I mention that they are free?

That's fine, but do they just convert it? Or can you apply all the changes you want to exposure, color, etc? If the former, then you may as well be just shooting JPEG and ignore the RAW thing because you're not getting the value from it.

For what it's worth, OP, if you aren't sure if you want to throw down a bit over a hundred dollars on Lightroom, both it and Photoshop are available for a 30 day trial if you want to try them out on these photos you just took.
