"err99" on 30D

Last night while I was viewing/deleting picture I got an "ERR99" error.
The CF-card light (red) stayed on, and camera "froze".
I turned camera off, but the "ERR99" error stayed there and red CF-card light stayed on.

PANIC!!!

I had to remove my battery to reset (reboot?) camera.

I had removed 580EX before it crashed. I did turn off the Speedlite, but did not turn off camera. Will this cause that error?

I've tried to find this error on Canon's website - no luck with error definition. No luck anywhere.

Any suggestions appreciated.

im not sure bout your problem but i have experienced issues with my camera when using both a hotshoe flash and my elinchrom d-lite 4 kit - quite worrying!!

That is not such an uncommon problem. I think that ERR99 is the generic code for random problems, or else it's a 'lens problem' code.

As you have found, you may have to pull out the battery to reset it. Another think might be to take off and replace the lens. If it comes back, it may be dirty lens contacts...which you can clean with a pencil eraser.

First time I've seen any error so paniced.

Hope I do not see it often enough that I get used to it - like blue screen of death in windows, or the "white page" when url does not exist.
