I do not think the composition is so much "messy" (though the sparkles are a bit distracting) as a hierarchy is not present. The bird sits slightly off center, which is offputing, while the logs point outward into nothing - this is reinforced by the paralleled lines that they form. There is a log going on with the logs and the lillypad, and I feel that this competes with the bird.

That is the as close to the uncropped version as I can get sans a bit more to the right and left. To my defense, I was shooting from a moving boat so the intial angle and the shooting angle changed rapidly. Knowing the bird would help as even as chicks, as this one is, their feet are simply enormous and their placement seemingly precarious. I kind of feel like there has to be a solid foundation for an unknown to exist, hence the detail to keeping the logs/Gallinule in focus and losing the background...Centering the bird would serve only to focus just there and disallow the viewer the chick's point of view..
