Extension Tubes

As an introduction to macro photography i'm using a set of extension tubes combined with the kit lens on my nikon D60... trouble is, i can see nothing through the view finder as it makes it so dark !

Any advice as to how to overcome this when trying to manually focus and compose the shot ?

hmm not sure - are you using a set of extension tubes - if so you could reduce the number of tubes to get more light into the lens. It might also be worth being at the smallest zoom extension of the lens to take advantage of its widest aperture possible - thus letting in more light

Which tubes are you using? Kenko or Nikon?

Isn't the kit lens a 'G' lens - ie it has no iris control on the lens. You need to be able to control the iris, and as far as I know only the Kenko auto tubes have that capability with G lenses. Otherwise the lens is fixed at minimum aperture.
