My neighborhood is a bit of a tourist trap for various reasons. We get a regular stream of them including daily bus tours. This week they seemed a bit more obvious.

So I was walking down Elizabeth street and ran into a swarm. They come to see this:

inlaid into the sidewalk in front of Joe's childhood home. It's extra rewarding because there's another similar plaque directly across the street at 5447 were Yogi grew up. The touching story of two young boys in love with baseball who made it big together. Here's Yogi's house taken from the vantage point of Joe's plaque:

If you look carefully you can see Yogi's plaque in the sidewalk. Three blocks down the street is Berra park, and Rigazzi's, were they both worked as teenagers, is still open and serving lunch to a packed tourist crowd.

Wow, very very interesting. Out here in Los Angeles we have plaques in sidewalks as well ... our plaques are prettier ... but your plaques tell a better story.

Yeah, I'm not a big pro sports fan, but I do like the story and all of us who live here are required to be able to give directions to Elizabeth between Macklind and Sublette when a car pulls up and rolls their window down.

Joe Garagiola...I have only vague memories of his bald head, his friendly demeanor, and him holding a microphone in his hand, laughing and joking. I'm only mid-50's, but his image, his legacy, is very faint to me. Seems like I am recalling him from some TV talk shows or something, or from announcing jobs he held, perhaps on CBS or WTBS baseball games in the early 1980's?
