f/1

I've been browsing a few photographers on deviantart, and there is something that caught my attention. On a few of the shots I noticed in the aperture is set to f/1, but the focal length is missing from the exif data. Could anyone here tell me what the photographer is using to get an aperture of f/1?

I first thought it might be some lens like this one,

But then I actually checked out the EXIF data and she's using a Nikon.

Certainly doesn't look like any of the versions of Noctilux (even if it could be somehow adapted to a longer flange distance). Of course, I don't believe that the "new Petzval" lens is yet available for sale... maybe its some similarly adapted lens.

[EDIT] Apparently the new Petzval lens was sold to the public .. in batches.


Its possible that it isn't really f/1 but an error in the EXIF if the lens used is adapted or doesn't have the proper electronics.

Most like that was a Scott Kelby joke so I'd guess this photo was taken with a 1.2 or 1.8 lens and the input was a typo

At least some of those photos are composites. None of them look like they were shot at f/1.0. Mostly looks about normal length on the main subjects.

...reminds me of the Helios lenses, like my old 44-2, a 58mm f/2 lens. Swirling bokeh was always a big deal with it.

I wonder if the EXIF information might be from a camera that allows manual EXIF entry for non-CPU lenses. That's pretty common. Could it also be the relatively new Metabones lens adapter that WIDENS focal length AND also **increases** effective aperture?

I have one of the new Petzval lenses, haven't used it a lot yet but seems like you can get varying results. I thought maybe Lensbaby, and have a couple of those too (Original and 2.0) but haven't gotten results quite like those in the picture linked.

I noticed the swirl seems to be going in one direction, and I think you can get a similar effect with a Lensbaby but at least I haven't gotten anything with that much area sharp before the swirl effect starts. I think it might just be photoshopped, looks to me like some of her other photos may be as well and I don't see other photos that appear to have been done using the same lens.

It could be a mistake on the site about the f stop used; my Flickr page showed that I took a picture with my printer. And it wasn't easy lugging that printer around to take pictures either!! (It was a darkroom print I'd scanned in.)

In my experience deviantart has always been accurate on retrieving and displaying the correct exif data, so I don't think it has anything to do with the site. As well, I have seen a few other artists on deviantart with very similar looking photos that aren't composites, and their exif data also shows no focal length and an aperture of f/1.
This is driving me crazy!

It's possible that these folks are using adapted lenses. It's also possible that in cases where lens information is missing or very limited in some specific way that some software along the way punts and simply writes for a 1.0 in there.

It's also possible that they're using one or another of the various f/1.0 capable lenses out there, but the lack of other lens information makes that seem slightly less likely to me.

If I had to guess I would bet on one of:

- there's some editor which does something the EXIF which causes deviantart to punt and say "ugh, ok, 1.0"
- there are some setup for adapting lenses that causes the EXIF to have the characteristics that make deviantart punt to 1.0.

but there's way more possibilities than that.

I saw that :roll:. I remember Nikon making a 50mm, f1 lens for SLR that never hit the market due to cost and size. It had a huge front element.

That looks like an adapted vintage lens. Does Nikon add a default of f/1 for an unchipped lens? I know with Canon if there is no chip then you don't get an aperture value, but you do get a generic 50mm as the recorded lens focal length.
