Photos NOT OK to edit
So I was wondering...is it um "appropriate" to advertise with your facebook page...like on a business card...it seems weird to me but I have seen it done ALOT lately.

Seems like lately everyone asks "do you have a facebook that I can like/look at/check out your work/etc."

I have a webpage but obviously Facebook is hugely popular and nearly everyone asks to see that vs the actual website...what do ya'll think?

I am still fairly new and working on all that. I have a facebook page for my up and coming "business". I started mine because I was getting the question a lot. I enjoy it helps me connect. I have a website as well with zenfolio which I like. It's just a matter of opinion I guess. facebook is free so I'm not loosing out. Just me blabbing hope it helps.

FB has a business type page you can set up and people just "like" your page instead of you accepting them - easier. I have photographers and artists I "follow" and it is a great way for them to show their newest stuff since it automatically posts on my page. When I comment of course it advertises to all of my friends. I have some that are expanding and using it to run contests where people can use comments as a voting mechanism. You can store lots of photos which are not as nice and professional looking as Zenfolio et al, are sufficient to get them to your webpage. Go for it. No design fees, no monthly hosting fees, easy access etc.

Yeah I think using facebook is fine, I seen a news report the other day about Myspace.com talking about how they lost 53 million users last month and Myspace is down to 63 million active users. Now on the flip side Facebook has almost 700 million active users and it keeps growing. Sure you are not trying to reach all 700 million but I think it is a good start to get the word out about your buisness and it is free.

It's fine to use Facebook like that, but do get a dedicated "business" page. I have one for one of my products here. Though I must confess, I've really not done much of anything at all with it and rarely update it.

If you do though, you should also try to get into Twitter. If you're super lazy with it (like I am), you can use my T34T software to make tweeting super-fast and easy. It's free.

You might want to look into "social media marketing" to find out more about it. Basically, it's ok and almost expected. It also tells people that you're tech-savvy, which points you out as a "go to" person.

Summary: DO IT~! :D

+1

I will have my proper business site link to my facebook page simply for the ease of updating new work. It allows for comments and conversation, that isn't necessary on the website proper.
I see it as the website will be the slick front end to inform potential customers, tell my "story", show my process, how I differ from others etc, and the facebook page can be "followed" which is a great tool to just keep your name popping up. The more you can (without being annoying) imprint your name on someone, when they are asked if they know a good (in my case) jeweler, or photographer, they should think of you first!

I have seen many turn to the Facebook method. As sad as it is people do seem to view my facebook business page over my website. If you will be uploading photos another perk is that you can now tag people. I find that my images are far more viewed on facebook then via my site. Once I tag the client in the photos it's linked back to my business facebook page and friends and family who weren't apart of the event have now just seen my work. Essentially you are reaching however many friends your client has on their facebook. Some even may be potentially interested in your services after seeing the photos. It's a great marketing took if used properly.

I do find that the way Facebook Compresses the photos to be a tad annoying. So under each album I ensure to give them a link to the high resolution photo slide show. Now linking to my webpage. Again marketing is key. Facebook is easy for people because all they have to do is like your services. They don't' have to bookmark your page or remember it. Any news feed items that you make with your business via facebook will now be on their pages. Just gentle reminders about your business.

I don't see it as a bad idea to make your own business page and advertise it on your business cards.

You can also use the Facebook ads if you're willing to pay for advertising. You can target them to specific age groups, geographical location, etc. I haven't tried them yet but it looks like a good way to get the word out in the local area about your business.

I've tried advertising on Facebook, but didn't find it effective. But that's just me and my product. Other people have better luck. There are a lot of factors to consider as well.
