Failed first night shots C&C Please!

Why are you shooting at such high ISO?

I only shoot 200 at night (as low as my D90 will go) and keep the lens somewhat open as I can and simply adjust shutter speed to match.

The one of hte guy standing in the lit doorway is a very tough shot to get. If you expose the foreground properly, the doorway will be blown out and vise versa. You could try bracketing that shot for HDR.

The metadata on this shot says I shot at 5.6 (to let lots of light in but not use the most open stop) and a 3/4 second exposure. To me it looks very sharp. One thing you have to understand is that with the lens wide open, you'll get a faster shutter and the lights will look sharper (that sign you wanted) but the picture may be soft. You have to find that balance where everything lines up. Took me about 500 shots before I realized how to shoot at night. I think I'm better at night architecture than anything else otherwise I wouldn't be giving advice.
