Went for a walk down to the Saltmarsh and this little fella perched really close

Not bad, the bokeh is pretty good, but, overall, it looks a little flat to me. Maybe you need to up the saturation on the bird just a bit to bring out the colours in the feathers.

Looks like you shot wide open and focus point was in the middle of the bird.

As WesternGuy mentioned ... image looks flat, under-exposed ... needs some PP.

Maybe if you adjusted the levels and added a touch of sharpness... Kinda like this... (hope you don't mind I ran it through Gimp to show what I meant)

I'm not the only one to use Gimp! Ashtun, use the Canon software that came with your camera to play with post processing your photos. Gimp is free also.
I started with the 550D and still use all the time! Great starter camera.
