here is the original (without the crop) and the horizon is the same. im certainly no photo buff and cant explain it.....maybe the DOF caused it:

I think it may be the exposure of the bright white sky conflicting with the trees making the DoF look posterized... Then after you converted it to B&W and changed the levels it made it more noticeable...

Just a guess....
