I have a rule for cropping. I only crop one dimension. So the 2:3 might crop to 1:1, but the short side will keep all the pixels. (Macro may be one exception here)
This is very helpful when out in the field with respect to framing and composition - to know potential creative directions I may take in post.

The bottom of this frame was dark and and did not fit the frame well given I was shooting at 28mm which was not quite wide enough.
Later in post I tried a the square crop from the top of the frame and liked the surreal quality of the composition and how thin the building looked at this angle.

I'm reminded of an album cover (LP kids ) but can't say it's the image as much as the feeling of it that triggers it for me.
I have no idea what album it might be. Like I said - just the feeling of it.
