Great first attempt - keep it up. The only thing to watch, from a composition point of view, is that the out of focus blooms in the background tend to attract the viewer's attention away from the main subject, which is in focus. This is mostly because they are red and are in significant contrast with the green out of focus background. If I was doing this, I would try and isolate the in focus flowers away from the others. My 0.02¢ FWIW.

Very nice attempt! but the background looks a but dark, try some HDR!;)

The focal point of the image is properly exposed, and though the background is dark, it's not a flaw. Not every image needs HDR; also, not every image is a good candidate for HDR.

The background was equally as bright as the subject initially. I chose to darken the background to bring more attention to the foreground.

For a 1st floral attempt, your image is really quite good. I like the overall composition, but as WesterGuy said, keep a careful eye on your backgrounds so that there aren't any competing standout colors.

I would try to use HDR to make the pic more vibrant, but it depends on the what you're trying to tell

Dude, this is totally not an image for HDR...as hinted to in an earlier post. Why even waste time with it? HDR should not be used as an attempt to fix a photo, HDR should be planned in advance for a photo. ;-)

I totally agree with Ernicus. A square crop emphasising the bloom and darkening the background and a little vignetting would be my choice.

Keep experimenting and posting - that's how we all learn!
