Been to a festival yesterday which given me tons of oppoturnities to practise on portraiture skill. Here are 3 versions of the same portrait. Which one do you like most. Any comments are welcome.

Thank you for you visit.

IMO, to be classed as a portrait you'd really have to see the person's eyes. This seems more like a candid snapshot, albeit a nice one.

Thank you for your clarification. I honestly do not know waht is the difference between portraiture and candid. 100% my mistake. :(

IMO, his face is way too far to the edge; that's the important part and its not given much importance.
Get face.

Wow, that certainly make a big difference. A big thanks.:

My theory is that they eye expects important things to be in 'important' places i.e. not near the edge. Of course you can put things on the edge to make an impact but in this picture, there's no attempt to do that so.............

In public places, take pictures as if it's your job. Look at this link, if you like ->People will assume some authority and cooperate.

Thank you for your link. With your advise, this is what I manage to come out with. Not quite sure I have got it right.

Better, imo.

My belief is that any attempt at 'portraiture' that doesn't show the eyes really has a big obstacle to succeed.
I try to catch the eyes and engage the person in some way. It takes a bit of nerve to start shooting that way but it will make a world of difference in the impact of your pictures.

Some more for you to look at

Thank you.

Ed,

the first two are underexposed (easy to do with dark skin)
The second one is disjointed because she has her head tilted away and he is staring straight at the camera. Their expression is so different, they might as well be in two different pictures. Her skin has a real plastic look. The picture of the guy is worlds different and really good.

Both pictures need much more sharpening.

#3 & #4 there is no real connection with the subject.

Ed, on 1, 2 &4 you need to capture some emotion in the picture. The subject either has to be showing it to someone or to you.

Here is a very quick snapshot of two friends. Their heads are posed similarly, they have similar expression and the lines of the picture point to the single center of interest. They are relating to each other and they show excitement and emotion.

I hope this all is of some use.
