First B & W photo. Critiques welcome

This is the first photo that I liked in B & W. I like the old feel to it and that sense that this area shows the age of the mission. I can picture cowboys with six shooters and the roughness of what the area was like in 1700-1800's.


Thoughts?

I was just starting to learn how to do B/W so I cannot critique. I wonder what the colour version looks like? I am responding to this so it can be bumped up so someone more knowledgeable can pitch in...

The lights and darks seem to be in the wrong places relative to each other. You've got a brightly-illuminated wall on the near left, but the details of the fountain and bells are not well presented.

Your subject is in the shadows which is ok but the shadows are to dark to really see the subject.

Here is a quick edit that brightens the shadows, crops off the distracting out of focus part on the left, darkens the left and has some lens confection to starting out the wall.

Can't seem to lighten the shadows enough???

Mike; ask him what software he uses, and what were the steps involved to arrive at the result.

Additionally, if this place is fairly close and you can get back there more, keep practicing on it. Try at different times of day, different seasons, different sky conditions, etc. Try different compositions, different exposure settings, different editing steps, etc.

You can do only so much in post, and then you have to try to get it better in camera.

Not liking the green toning at all.

I used photoshop dodge and burn and little bit of a curves adjustment for contrast.

Maybe it's just better color??
