First Family Session in need of C+C

Shooting a family at F2.8 is not a good idea no where near enough DOF to get them all in focus

What do you suggest is a good f stop for a good amount of DOF for family portraits?

Use a longer focal length at F5.6 and you can still blur the background

I actually I really dislike the feet missing from that image, the original shot is much better and makes them seem grounded

K thanks, I'll try that next time.

Ya the other ones seems awkward too. but next time I'll remember to look and not cut off any body parts.

Thanks everyone so far for all the C+C. Very helpful and I feel motivated to go out and learn from my mistakes.

In the 2nd photo, you've cropped in vertically right down the center.
What would've been a better way to crop the photo. Would the rule of thirds apply here.
If you've cut off their feet, go ahead and cut off their feet. This crop puts Dad on the left third of the frame.

Just a thought.

I actually like the original, but I would have straightened out the image. With the full bench, it looks pleasing centered, whereas, in the new crop I don't like the feet chopped and the end of the bench chopped off center.
