You dont seem to understand tone mapping and HDR. Its physically impossible to see an HDR image at this time with the technology we have so we have to tone map the image so it can be displayed. ALL HDR images are tone mapped so I guess what you are saying is this is not a single file tone mapped to give that awful look. You created that awful look with multiple images. If you re do the two images exactly the same way then when you think you are finished move the Highlight Smoothing slider all the way to the right. That will get rid of that gray patch of sky in the first image, and it might get rid of that gray smudgy look in the second image. I dont know what software you used but its not enough. Final tweeking is usually necessary in a program like Photoshop. The newest version of Photomatix does have a final tweeking box that pops up making what I just said not 100% right. However its best, in my opinion, to ignore that box and go right into Photoshop and treat the final image any way you wish to make it really pop. Exposure increased slightly and then Gamma Correction to about 80-85 usually works for me. Also if you find your greens are that bright you might want to desaturate slightly so the vegetation looks more real.
