First Live Concert

Disclaimer... it was legit 20 people in the crowd. It was a indie performer from New York, who goes under the name Yonas. He was nice enough to take me under his wing and let me follow him around and be part of his crew for his performance. Here are the few I got to so far. The stage/bar's lighting was terrible so it doesn't have the "concert" feel unfortunately.

I don't mind the first one, even with him looking away. The second one is out of focus, and that's pretty much a picture killer. Keep at it.

First try. Hopefully I have more to come! Like I said it was a small crappy venue, but I guess it's the true photographer when they beat the venue and obstacles.

Yes that is quite true. Experience when working under different light situations makes or breaks photos, regardless of venue. Just takes time. practice and understanding light.

Yeah, unfortunately many venues don't allow DSLR. Luckily I was able to get intouch with Yonas' management and he told them I was his personal photographer so I had the pass to do as I pleased for the most part. Which was nice and helped the situation. But I think I came away with a few shots outta 400 that are keepers.

Um... Okay.

These aren't good, and they're not godd for one reason: flash. Nothing kills the mood of a concert image faster than using a flash. You say the club didn't have that "concert feel". Well, you're certainly not going to enhance that by using a flash. Maybe, and I've personally never done it, you might want to trying dragging your flash. If nothing else, it'll add a somewhat interesting aspect to the photo. In these, it looks like you used the pop-up flash. It's brash and stark.

I've never encountered a smaller venue which didn't permit DSLR's. The performers are normally of a level where they'll actually welcome it. They don't normally have a "personal photographer", so just the very idea is one which they'll welcome; it's an ego thing.

My rule of thumb is a simple one: If I would need to use a flash to shoot a performance, I won't shoot and I'll just enjoy the performance.

You say he took you "under his wing". How so? By letting you shoot? He's a singer, you're a photographer. There is no "wing" there. If he's willing to accept the free pictures you probably offered him, then that's nothing more than a "deal". It's certainly not you being taken under anyone's wing.

If you get the opportunity to shoot him again (and, if you're "under his wing", that shouldn't be a problem), scope out the venue first. If it's a venue which isn't going to be conducive to good, non-flash photography, suggest that you meet well before the gig and take some promo shots instead of "concert" shots.

I understand they flash hurt it was off camera sb-700 being held in one hand by my either. My iso was up High with a slow shutter speed, no luck. So I used my flash.

As for under his wing he let me hangout with him back stage and chatted with me for ever. Bought be a few shots and it seemed like we knew each other forever. It was a good connections and I enjoyed working with him. I feel as I got some decent pictures for my first time. Some
May disagree but I worked with what i was given and he was happy with the shots. I'm not saying I'm the best nor am I not accepting your input I just simply wanted to share and see what I could work on. I know the feel isn't there because the flash but the emotion in his facial expression takes it away for me.
