First Photoshoot Inspiration and Advice for Patriotic session?

I'm doing my first photoshoot and need some advice. Any suggestions for beginners? It's for a friend, whose husband is about to get deported to Afghanistan. I will be shooting the two of them...he will be wearing his uniform and we will probably shoot in a park.

Please send your suggestions and any creative ideas for how to make this successful. I will also probably bring an American flag, so if you have any ideas/examples how to incorporate that, I'd love to hear! Thanks!
