Digital exposure is like a game of chicken. The version where the two drivers race toward a cliff edge and the winner is the one who stops first closest to the edge. The loser stops sooner or goes over the cliff. Don't go over the cliff.

P.S. We evaluate the exposure of raw files with this: RawDigger but you should save that for later.

Interesting analogy - I use that one for finances...but, like my fear of heights, I tend to stand as far away from that edge as possible. I am lousy at playing chicken. Having said that, however, I will step closer to that edge - photographically speaking. It might be baby steps - but move forward I shall.

I think we've managed to skewer the two main issues, and I have made the appropriate adjustments in the 3400. I will be trying it out, and will start another post with the results.

Oh - and Joe? That RawDigger? I peeked at it...and now my head hurts. Gonna tuck that one in the back corner of the broom closet for now. I think my burners are full at this point.

I have enjoyed both the photos (which were very nice) AND the thoughtful critique that followed. Congrats on the D3400- a very fine camera!

Now off to tweak a few setting in my old Nikon (BTW, VERY jealous of your new toy....it'll be years before I can upgrade!).

I think with time and trying different settings you can improve on what you shot with your first outing, I have just upgraded to an Nikon D800 and to me that is a mahoosive step up from my D600 , to be fair the 600 is brill and I'm always learning every time I do a shoot, but to keep current I wanted to have something I can have fun with and learn at the same time, hence the D800, I love what you have done with your shots , and just keep at it, and best of all have fun, it's a hobby and what you achieve will always be special to you [emoji41]
