A flash meter is an incident light meter made for measuring flash output. You can buy dedicated flash meters for relatively cheap. I have a flash/ambient/spot meter that I use for everything.

Monolights are strobes that have the power pack on the light itself. They are very portable and easy to use. Usually they are triggered by the flash of the key light, which would be wired to your camera.

They are much more expensive, but if you only want to measure flash output, just a flash meter and save money. Your camera has a perfectly good reflective meter in it for ambient readings.

o boy....i guess i'll just use my creativity in the mean time until i have enough cash to buy this little toy

You don't have to buy that meter because you are only measuring flash output. Your camera has a spot meter built in. Mine does not. Plus I shoot MF and LF, and my cameras don't have meters at all. I need an ambient meter.
