First real attempt at backlighting... C&C?

Went out to Lopez Lake here in San Luis Obispo this evening and shot these about an hour to half an hour before sunset. They were shot in RAW and edited in Lightroom. After a few photos I ended up accidentally sticking my hand in some stinging nettle so I'm typing this with a partially numb hand right now.

Any suggestions? Exposure / composition? Anything else that needs working on?

1. ISO 200, 35mm, f/4.5, 1/1000 sec

2. I think this one is my favorite of the two.
ISO 200, 40mm, f/8.0, 1/800 sec

Very nice time of day. The photos have good lighting, and I like the texture of the grass.

Stinging nettles are horrible.

I think the first pic would look better if the seed-head closest to the camera was in sharp focus & the more distant ones trailing of to OOF.
