create a layer and then gaussian blur it and change the opacity, then erase parts of that layer to make the parts i want to be sharp.

the first one has amazing colors. Could definitely see that in a magazine somewhere.

try using a mask rather than erasing.
A mask doesn't destroy pixels and is much more manageable.
