First shots with 60D Audi q7 a5, Mercedes SLS c&c

Also interested in this.. i do though suspect it's a post effect.. much like the similiar effect from GT5 photomode.

On closer inspection, i believe it's just a low key sephia.. i'll try replicate this.. hang on

What part makes #1 look professional? The stack of safety cones on the right side of the frame? Or the fact that it's underexposed?

What part makes #5 look professional? The fact that every important part piece of the image is either cropped to tight (tire, headlight) or out of focus (vehicle brand)?

3 is snapshotish with too busy a background and 4 is cropped awkwardly with a distracting background...

Now, #2 on the other hand, that is a very good image. You have a great isolated subjected. The wheels are turned about 30 degrees to show off the rims. There is sun glint hitting the roof and window, as well as a glint from both headlights. The background is sufficiently out of focus to not be distracting. It was shot at a low and angle which makes the vehicle more prominent. It is much more professional.

The only problem with this image is that it looks as though it is a bit underexposed.

When you say images look "very professional", that statement carries a lot of weight on a board with a lot of experienced photographers. When you throw around the term "professional" carelessly then it is bound to rub someone the wrong way, like it has me, especially when there is nothing professional about the images you've cited. In the case of #1 and #5 that is a huge overstatement.

When you say "it's a matter of personal preference" most experienced photographers will agree that the two images you deemed "very professional" are in fact technically flawed in various ways. Saying something is professional carries with it the implication of the utmost perfection.

The subject is not isolated enough in 1: The background isn't adding anything so I would have shot closer, and at more of an angle. Would have been better had the doors been open and the wheels angled. The Q7 shots aren't bad (I actually have a similar model of the same car - it's a beast - very comfortable to sit in too) although they are underexposed. the second of the Q7 shots isn't isolated from the audi that is behind it. The fact that I know it's an Audi (aided by the fact that I picked up my Q7 from a service at the Audi dealership this morning, I can tell you that the car behind is an Audi A3!) means it's too much of a distraction.

The other two crops are too awkward especially no5. I don't want to see half of the VW Polo's taillights and some dark space would have been better to have been looking at the corner and be able to see the whole back, although the Polo isn't the sexiest of VW's cars - mind you the Audi S5 convertible I was given as a courtesy car for two days while the beast was in for a full service was quite nice!

Having said that, this was your first time using a new camera, so as you get used to it, things will improve

Thanks for the feedback guys, they were all shot on the 50mm 1.8 i will post setting up later.

Yeah the Q7 is a beast this one was a 4.2 quattro, for the size it was quick, although surprisingly the polo gti was more of a thrill. That's cool that you got an s5 courtesy car, they sounds so good.

Q7 is superhard on tyres. First set we had were v expensive and last about 4,500 miles. Not good. Tested a 4.2 V8 diesel. Lots of torque.... The A6 3.0 TDI goes like stink, used one in Germany recently and it did over 160mph with the revs not over 3,500 rpm...

Agree with you PhillOS, why so much negativity? Saying a shot looks professional is just a thumbs up to someone that's really trying. Ok, maybe the shots wouldn't be used in an add-campaign but in my opinion they are just very good and if someone wants to call them professional that's just a great compliment.

Saying something looks "professional" when it isn't is not helpful to OP. It is a compliment that should be reserved for works that are all but void of technical flaws. The true compliment is to point out theflaws in the images that are flawed, and to point out what works in the images that work.

to say they look professional doesn't help the OP get better in their craft.

to say you really like them, and you really like the way they look, that's one thing. but to say they are professional... no.


as for saying the board is full of people that know everything and are always right.. i disagree. i am here. and i'll be the first to say i know nothing. and i'm always wrong. and that is EXACTLY why i am HERE.. to gain KNOWLEDGE from those that are experienced.


that said... PhillOS..... i LOVE 1 and 5... they were my favorites of the bunch. i loved the lighting, i loved the composition, i loved the crop etc..

i DON'T think they are professional images. i DO think they look awesome...

and, i am a beginner.

the PROFESSIONALS here, disagree with you assessment. and mine.

and i am not surprised. they are professionals. or people people with much more experience. and i am a newbie.

seeing their comments, in contrast to what I thought were great pics, reminds me that i am still looking at images with an amateur snapshot point of view. and reminds me i have a lot to learn. it also reminds me i'm in the perfect place to do it.

I think we should concentrate on giving our own opinion without attacking someone else for theirs. An opinion was given but not without a backhanded attack at someone else's opinion. Every one has an opinion and they are entitled to it. JMHO.
