First try at insects

The second photo i played with using Photomatix because i was bored. I kinda like how it turned out. Any thoughts? Thanks

I think your DOF needs to be deeper or pick a better focus spot, these all could be good photos of the entire insect was in focus. And #2 and 3 was not a mimic of HDR they probably look better.

Yes agree with Tiny.

Alternatively selective focus on the eyes will also work in some instances with a shallower DOF.

For your first try I think they are great! I love the first one, I like the bum of the bee in focus but maybe a little distracting with the 'middle bit' of the bee (sorry I don't do insects haha), so again maybe just work on picking a better focus spot. Take HEAPS focusing on different parts. (Or as many as you can before the insect buggers off, unless its dead).
