I'm not a fan. Too dark, not enough details in the shadows. Can barely tell if its water or sky or this/that.

I do however like the rim light, just wish the overall ambient was a tad bit higher.

^^Agree^^ a bit, not much, but a bit of fill was needed here to knock down the shadows.

In the simplest way- it's just too dark

Why crop like that in #2?

And more important, did he catch anything?

I'm in agreement with the rest. The silhouette style just doesn't work for these shots in my personal opinion. I never once in my life thought I would say this to anybody because fill flash is against my religion, but using a strobe to fill in the darkness would really benefit these shots I think.

What were your camera settings and lens? Perhaps I could help you figure a way to adjust your settings to capture more detail in the darker areas without using a fill flash.
