Fixing Lenses

A very general question ... How does one learn the basics of learning how to clean (and take apart etc) lenses and lens elements.

I assume there are schematic manuals (somewhere), and of course some required tools, chemicals, etc.

Yes, there are repair manuals and drawings. Not necessarily easy to find because there really aren't for public consumption.

I'm sure there are some self taught 'experts' but I'd guess that the majority of people who learn how to service lenses etc, are learning on-the-job at a manufacturer's service centres.

Someone could probably learn the principles of lens functionality and design at college/university, but I don't know that they would learn how to fix/repair specific Canon or Nikon lenses, for example.

Being proprietary information the type of manuals you seek are hard to come by.

Special tools are usually required to disassemble/reassemble a lens and to verify optically that a lens has been assembled properly.
