Flash during the day & thanks TPF!

Ive just finished reading through strobist 101 and 102 and from my understanding here is how I would do it.

Frame your shot, dial in your manual settings to get your ambient correct (or how you want it to look) without going over your sync speed, it will be a balancing act between aperture and shutter speed to get the required DOF.

Then set up your strobe/s to fill or light your subjects, if you dont have enough power (at full) to illuminate you will need to open up your aperture and compensate with your shutter speed accordingly, flash only cares about your f/stop (and ISO of course), ambient is influenced by both. ISO could also be increased, but again you need to watch your max sync.

Its really just a balancing act and knowing how altering one thing can have side effects, experimentation.

If you havent already, spend a few hours and have a read through the strobist blog.

Good luck man, you got the gear, you have the know how, make it happen!

Rob, yeah I understand. But more than likely it will be small aperture at Iso 50 and 1/200 shutterspeed because it will be bright tomorrow. Thanks for the good luck!

Gsgary, HSS isn't possible because I use cowboy trigger. I have to put the flash on camera if I want to do that.

Oh, plus with your longer lens you'll probably have a little more wiggle room with DOF where larger aperture will still be shallow when you zoom in.

what time of day and where are you going?

Are they just going to sit in one place? Are you photographing children?

First of all I want to say thanks to all of you. I know haven't been the best guy to have around here. Argued a lot with some of you.. but hey.. that's part of the fun on the Internet right? I want to give special thanks to (in no particular order) BigMike, Derrel, Kundalini, OldMacMan, Ghache, BigTwinky, BitterJeweller, Kmh, gsgary, SrBiscuit, VillageIdiot, Overread. You guys have been great and helpful to everybody.
I am overwhelmed to be included in this list of heavy hitters. Mucho gracias. Have you been juicing lately?

......You want better results then stop shooting manual all the Time. Only when needed.
Bo11ocks. That's a very broad, general and incorrect statement.

It's never never easy enduring criticism, especially when you feel a good job has been done. Kudos for coming back for more. So, while it stings a little at the time, you have obviously learned a lot. Your pics are better and more consistent. The pre-planning you are doing tells me the shots will be keepers. Can't wait for the post.

I'll echo Kundalini, it's humbling being put in a list of members I have learned a ton from.

As for the gear, I know the PW will allow TTL metering. Typically, my PW is just a trigger that is nice to know can transfer the TTL if I need it. They are great when you want the HSS off camera, though it is rare for me to need that. I still find that my light meter is a more valuable tool, especially in the situation you are going in to where you are essentially balancing two readings. You won't be able to get one in time for your shoot, but I would definitely consider it in my long term gear plan.

Good luck bud, post up them pictures

I just did... didnt go as planned LOL
