What kind of lens and more importantly technique do you use to catch an insect mid-flight like this? I’m newish to macro so any feedback you can offer is appreciated.

You also continue to learn from your mistakes. Are you asking for help/suggestions? If so, what lens did you use and what settings?

    Used my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8.

    f/7.1 - 1/125 - ISO 400

Don't use auto focus. It will only cause the lens to rack.
