I use black velvet material ...works everytime! I also use black velvet as a background for sports groups.. You can buy it on sale for half price so get it when it's on sale. I paid $100. for mine and another $100. to have it sewn like a curtain. My backdrop is 8" feet high and at least 8" wide. You never have to worry about shadows!

This is the setup I use for this kind of shots.

I place everything about 2 feet away from the window, sometimes instead of foam board I use aluminum foil. I also put white sheer drapes on the window to diffuse the light.
This are some of the photos I've taken, I used film on all of them.
